Joe Garagiola was born and raised in the "Hill" section of St. Louis, Missouri, and became a hometown hero in 1946 by joining the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher after service in World War II. A .258 hitter over his nine-season Major League career, Mr. Garagiola also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants, all of the National League. He earned a World Series ring in his rookie season, when the Cardinals defeated Ted Williams and the mighty Boston Red Sox in seven games. After retiring from baseball in 1954, he began the career as a broadcaster and television personality for which he has become nationally known. In addition to radio, he has called games for NBC's "Game of the Week" and covered the World Series. In 1991, Mr. Garagiola was inducted into the Broadcaster's Wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Presently, in addition to being a regular contributor to NBC's Today Show, Mr. Garagiola is President Emeritus of the Baseball Assistance Team (BAT), a charitable organization that helps former professional baseball players and family members who have fallen on hard times. As National Chairman of Oral Health America's National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP), Mr. Garagiola makes numerous public appearances in an effort to educate Americans about the dangers of smokeless - or spit - tobacco. With partial funding from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NSTEP partners with Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) to let people know that 'smokeless does not mean harmless,' and to break the link between America's pastime and this addictive and potentially deadly drug.
