Erik Hagen, currently Assistant Baseball Coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes, has been involved in baseball for most of his life. Erik's participation in the sport progressed from high school, to college, to Minor League play, before he moved on to a coaching career. Prior to coaching at Ohio State, Erik served as head coach at the high school and college levels, an experience that gave him first-hand knowledge of the problem of spit tobacco use among players. At the age of 18, Erik began using spit tobacco while playing for The College of Wooster. It was not long after that he became addicted and graduated from mild spit tobacco products to more powerful nicotine-laden brands. Erik used spit tobacco for ten years before he was finally able to quit. He is now helping spread NSTEP's message of "Don't Start!" Erik's experience with spit tobacco awareness efforts include working with the Lexington Legends Minor League Baseball club on the "This Team, Spit Free" program he created to help educate Little Leaguers in the Lexington area about the dangers of spit tobacco use. He also worked as the Kentucky Spit Tobacco Education Program Coordinator. Erik has a passion for sharing his experiences and serving as a role model for children. He encourages other coaches to be role models and to tell kids what he was never told-That spit tobacco is dangerous, and that using it has absolutely nothing to do with the game of baseball.
