Doug HarveyAs an umpire, Doug Harvey worked National League games for 31 years before retiring in 1992. The former voice of Major League Baseball's You Make the Call series was diagnosed with cancer in August of 1997 after paying a routine visit to a specialist for a bronchial condition that had plagued him for about a year. The doctor found a growth at the back of Mr. Harvey's throat. When Mr. Harvey, a long-time spit tobacco user, questioned his doctor about what caused the cancer, the doctor replied, "It was 100% tobacco". Mr. Harvey and Joe Garagiola have spoken side by side to Major League players about the dangers of spit tobacco. Mr. Harvey and his dedicated wife Joy remain two of the most active team members dedicated towards the NSTEP message.
