2007 NSTEP Slogan Contest Winner Makes the Call
WILLIAMSPORT , PA – Blake Wargo, a Little Leaguer from Milton , PA. , understands that using spit tobacco is a losing game. His slogan, “Make the smart call…no tobacco at all!” is the winner of Oral Health America 's 2007 National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP) Slogan Contest. Blake will be recognized during the 2007 Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport , August 17-26.
“This is a wonderful program for our youth,” said John Wargo, Blake's father. “We're very excited and proud about Blake being selected. It's a great opportunity for him and our local league.”
Blake added, “I'm really happy that I won. I collect pins and can't wait to see mine!”
Unlike Blake, many children and their parents may not know that spit or “smokeless” tobacco is an addictive substance that can cause cancer and other health problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 13.6 percent of high school boys – and 2.2 percent of high school girls – currently use spit tobacco products.
“Playing baseball has everything to do with being healthy, learning new skills, and having fun,” said Sue Dodd, Oral Health America 's Director of Programs. “Tobacco use can ruin all of that. Our annual slogan contest is reminder to parents and children that Little League Baseball is tobacco free.”
During the 10-day Little League Baseball World Series, Oral Health America provides information about oral health, toothbrushes, and pins to tens of thousands of Little League players and fans. Throughout the year, Oral Health America's NSTEP works with Little League International to educate families about the health risks of spit tobacco use, including oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and nicotine addiction.
Oral Health America is the nation's premier independent advocacy organization dedicated to improving oral health. To find out more, visit www.oralhealthamerica.org. NSTEP is funded by Sunstar Americas and the PA Department of Health.
